HYANNIS The Newport Hotel Group, owner of the Hyannis Harbor Hotel, is working with the town of Barnstable and local contractors to repair damage caused by a five-alarm fire at the building on Sunday.
The fire caused extensive damage to one wing of the building, but business operations are continuing, Newport Hotel Group said in a statement.
Hotel staff are working to accommodate future guests in a separate free-standing building overlooking Hyannis Harbor. The management staff, meanwhile, is evaluating what they will be able to offer as far as services and amenities this season. We do not expect any reduction in our team this season, the release read. What has otherwise been a deeply difficult situation has been offset by an outpouring of support and encouragement from our neighbors, guests and friends in the community.
About 10 rooms on the hotel s two floors were damaged.
“My hope is that they can occupy spaces not affected by the fire,” he said.
The state fire marshall’s office and Barnstable Police are assisting in investigating the fire.
The Newport Hotel Group has owned the hotel since 1999. Scott Alemany, the hotel s corporate director of operations, could not be reached for comment Monday.
Plagued by fires
The hotel has been plagued by fires in the past. In November 2016, a portion of the hotel was damaged in a three-alarm fire that started in the wall between the second and third floors on the Bay Street side of the building and made its way to the attic.
HYANNIS – Damage to the Hyannis Harbor Hotel is estimated to be in the millions following a five-alarm fire Sunday afternoon at the Ocean Street property.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but Hyannis fire Chief Peter Burke said it is not believed to be suspicious in nature.
The Hyannis Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation just before 2 p.m. Sunday.
Firefighters battled the fire on the first floor, and the fire eventually extended to the attic. Guests and staff were evacuated from the hotel, and there were no injuries.
Burke said he wasn t sure if guests had been staying in the room where the fire started.
