A disappointing limbo? Byron candidates on delayed council elections

By Mia Armitage and Hans Lovejoy

Campaigns started early compared to previous election years, after a twelve-month delay due to the pandemic.
One of the most noticeable features of the 2021 Byron Shire Council elections has been the number of independents wanting to win power.
There were already six independent tickets announced by late July, including representation from four existing councillors, one of whom quit The Greens (Mayor Michael Lyon) to lead his own team. ....

A cheery new report! – The Echo

Anyway the new report, entitled
Woody Vegetation Change, Statewide Landcover and Tree Study, says that, ‘The calculated annual loss of woody vegetation for 2019 was 54,500 hectares, or 0.08 per cent of the area of NSW’.

Eighty six per cent of all clearing was accounted for by agricultural practices, say the authors, and ‘Clearing activities related to infrastructure accounted for the remaining 14 per cent of vegetation loss, which was comparable to the previous year’s figures’.
If we back up a few more years, the picture wasn’t much better. ....

Local Circus Festival goes national – The Echo

Hans Lovejoy
The Mullum Circus Festival has announced that it will henceforth be known as National Circus Festival, with its new name and branding officially unveiled alongside its early bird 2021 program announcement.
To be held at the Mullumbimby Showground from September 20–26, organisers say the National Circus Festival hosts a dual program, with two distinct streams, including a four-day National Training Program from September 20–23, assembling the nation’s best performers in one location to collaborate, trial new shows and develop existing works.
Following the training program, the weekend of September 24–26 will see the festival go into full swing, with a program of more than fifty events set to grace the stages over the three-days, with the first ten acts announced. ....
