GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said there was no link between election campaign rallies and rising Covid-19 cases in Assam and studies have shown that not a single Covid-19 case has been reported from the places where campaign rallies were held.
He added that no candidate in the state has been infected.
Assembly elections were held in the state on March 27, April 1 and 7 and political parties campaigned across the state throughout March till April 4. Simultaneously Covid-19 cases, which was at the lowest, 396, in February climbed to 875 in March and has reached 4,528 till April 16. ....

GUWAHATI: The standard operating procedures (SOP) for the upcoming Bihu celebrations issued by the state health department has come as a dampener for both organisers and the people of the city.
The SOP with several strict guidelines triggered disappointment among Bihu organisers of the city. The umbrella committee of the 30 Bihu committees Greater Guwahati Bihu Organisers’ Coordination Committee (GGBOCC) has expressed their unwillingness to enforce the guidelines, saying it was the responsibility of the health department and the district administration.
“It is not feasible for organisers with limited manpower to carry on thermal scanning of thousands of visitors in an open ground. How will it be possible to make visitors use hand sanitizers at a ground where people come from all directions?” Kailash Sarma, advisor of the coordination committee, asked. ....

Assam elections: Security tightened as voting for 3rd phase of polls begins

The voting for the third and final phase of Assam Assembly elections began on Tuesday morning as huge security blanket spread in 12 districts while all Covid-19 protocols being maintained, officials said.
The voters comprising men, women and the first time electorates, in large numbers queued up in front of the polling stations well before the voting for 40 of the total of 126 assembly seats opened at 7 a.m.
The polling would continue till 6 p.m. without any break as the Election Commission has extended one hour time in view of the Covid-19 induced situations.
Assam Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Khade said that all necessary steps have been taken to conduct free, fair, peaceful and smooth elections on Tuesday, when 79,19,641 voters including 39,07,963 women electorates are eligible to cast their votes across 9,587 polling stations in 6,107 locations. ....
