UBS (UBSG.S) reported an unexpected $774 million loss on Tuesday from the collapse of U.S. investment fund Archegos, taking the total hit to global banks from the stricken family office beyond $10 billion.
The charge taken by Switzerland s biggest bank comes as the fallout from Archegos continues to ripple across the banking industry, with Nomura (8604.T) posting on Tuesday its biggest quarterly loss in over a decade as a result of its dealings with the stricken fund. The Japanese bank said it will book losses of around $2.9 billion this year on Archegos. read more ....

Portfolio managers increased their exposure to petroleum slightly last week, focusing mainly on Brent, but positions remained rangebound as OPEC+ production discipline was offset by a new wave of coronavirus infections.
Hedge funds and other money managers bought the equivalent of 14 million barrels in the six most important petroleum futures and options contracts in the week ending April 20. (https://tmsnrt.rs/2QzX1Tl)
The combined positions across all six contracts rose to a three-week high of 832 million barrels, according to records published by ICE Futures Europe and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. ....

Melvin Capital, the hedge fund at the center of the GameStop (GME.N) trading frenzy, lost 49% on its investments during the first three months of 2021, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday.
The fund, founded by Gabe Plotkin, lost 7% in March, the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity.
A Melvin Capital spokesman declined to comment.
Melvin had established itself as a strong performer posting annualized returns of 30% between 2014 and 2020
But Plotkin had bet the retailer GameStop s stock price would tumble and then faced off with retail traders who used online trading apps and exchanged information on Reddit s WallStreetBets forum to push the stock price significantly higher in the early weeks of January. ....
