Fire-damaged Hawke's Bay petrol station: Repair time unclear

The forecourt of the Bay View BP, on the main road north of Napier, was significantly damaged by fire on Friday night.
The cause has not been officially determined but early indications show a container of petrol was filled, placed inside a vehicle and ignited by a flame from a cigarette lighter.
Today, the forecourt lay in tatters with burnt-out cars lining the concrete beside petrol pumps.
A BP spokesperson said the site was still being assessed.
He said all the team members were being supported, and remained BP employees.

The volunteer fire crew who tackled the "one-in-a-lifetime" BP Bay View fire were well prepared - they had trained at the site.

Neighbour describes 'ball of flame' as petrol station engulfed

A woman who watched a Napier petrol station go up in flames says it was engulfed in minutes after a container of petrol in a vehicle was ignited by a cigarette lighter.

Luckily, there were no injuries or deaths.
"The entire service station forecourt was alight within minutes and it is nothing short of a miracle that nobody was injured or killed.
"There appears to be little or no damage to the main business premises itself."
Video footage from locals show the large blaze, and witnesses said they heard explosions.
"Bay View BP across from my house," one resident posted on Facebook.
"Heard a siren and thought it was a car horn. Ran outside to the forecourt on fire and exploding."
Police commended the actions of the BP staff as well as FENZ for their quick and professional response.
