The Huguenot Tunnel, which is part of the N1 national road outside of Cape Town, will be closed to traffic at night from June 14 as it prepares to move to the next phase of its upgrade.
Much of the extensive maintenance work has been done under live traffic conditions over the past two years, but the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral)Â says the next phase will include the improvement of the tunnel fire detection system and the replacement of the tunnel strip and adaption lighting, which all require quiet traffic conditions. ....

The first day of 2021 brings inclement weather for KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Free State and the North West, according to the South African Weather Service.
Impact-based warnings
- Yellow (Level 2) warning for disruptive rain which might lead to the flooding of susceptible informal settlements, roads and low-lying bridges and may also result in difficult driving conditions. Slippery roads and poor visibility can be expected over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the central and eastern parts of both North West and the Free State, spreading to parts of the Lowveld of Limpopo in the evening.
- Yellow (Level 2) warning for wind (south-easterly), with possible localised damage to properties, problems for high-sided vehicles, as well as temporary closures of major routes (N2-Sir Lowry s Pass and N1-Huguenot Tunnel) until Saturday evening over the Cape Metropole, south-western parts of Cape Winelands and western parts of ....

The Western Cape is still expecting a large influx of vehicular traffic from other parts of the province this festive season.
While this is good news for the tourism economy of the Western Cape, Transport MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela warns it will require motorists to take extra measures to keep roads safe and to contain Covid-19.
Madikizela was at the Huguenot tunnel outside Paarl on Thursday 3 December to launch the festive road safety plan.
The minister said the plan also includes a focus on Covid-19, through increased enforcement and awareness of Covid-19 health and safety rules, especially on public transport. ....
