Department of Physics, Utkal University was established in the year 1967. The Department is recognized by UGC under its DRS and BSR programmes, and DST under FIST, PURSE and INSPIRE programmes. It is also recognized by the Govt. of Odisha as a Centre of Excellence.. The programmes currently offered are M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D. Faculty members of the Department conduct research in the frontier areas Physics such as Gravitation, Cosmology, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics (Theory & Experiment), Materials Physics (experimental and computational) and Mathematical Biology. . . The department played a pivotal role in Modernizing Physics Education and Research in the State and in establishing Odisha Physical Society.. . Department of Physics was instrumental in setting up of Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar.. . IBM 1130 gifted to the Department by the UGC in 1972 marked the beginning of Computer age in the State. Rourkela Steel Plant, NIT Rourkela, Odisha Electricity Board, Institute of Physics (IOP) Bhubaneswar were the users.. . Initiation of PGDCA programme, emerged as a full fledged Dept. of Master in Computer Science and Applications. . . The Department acted as a Nodal point for the NCERT ‘CLASS’ project for schools for about a decade. . . The department has Distinguished Alumni [Recipient of Bhatnagar Prize (3), Humboldt, Marie-Curie, Swarnajayanti & Ramanujan Fellowships, ICTP (Italy) Associateship; worked with Nobel Laureates]. . . More than 500 alumni have taken up research as their career. A large number of alumni are scientists in BARC, RRCAT, IGCAR, ISRO, NPL; faculty at TIFR, IISc, IITs, SINP, IMSc, IOP, NISER, IISERs, NITs, CUs, NPL, PRL, . .
