Detailed description is Porta al Prato fa parte delle Mura di Firenze e si trova al centro di un piazzale molto trafficato sui Viali di Circonvallazione cittadini, dove convergono il viale Fratelli Rosselli, la via Ponte alle Mosse, viale Belfiore e Il Prato.StoriaSi tratta di una delle porte superstiti più antiche della città, e risale al 1285, anno nel quale si iniziò la sesta cerchia di mura.
Come le altre porte cittadine fu abbassata nel 1526, per essere meno vulnerabile agli attacchi della nuova artiglieria, e fu nell'occasione coperta dalla loggetta con tetto a spiovente, alla sommità del quale si trova un'insegna metallica segnavento.La porta prende il nome dall'antistante piazzale detto Il Prato, o piazzale della Porta al Prato, non dal fatto che da essa parta una strada che porta anche a Prato.
Anticamente infatti questa zona non era lastricata e veniva tenuta così per il mercato del bestiame settimanale.Fino a qualche anno fa, sulla lunetta interna era presente l'affresco di una Madonna con Bambino e santi, attribuito a Michele di Ridolfo.
Spostato in depositi dopo la conclusione del restauro nel 2013, è ora custodito all'interno della sala conferenze della Biblioteca delle Oblate.La piazza del Prato è stata per tre secoli sede del Calcio in costume e del mercato del bestiame.
