Detailed description is Der Erlaufsee (früher auch Erlafsee) ist ein Bergsee am Fuße der Gemeindealpe unweit der Ortschaften Mitterbach am Erlaufsee, St.Sebastian und Mariazell.. Mitten durch den See fließt nicht nur der Oberlauf der Großen Erlauf, dort verläuft auch die Grenze zwischen Niederösterreich und der Steiermark. Der See liegt an der Bundesstraße 71 über den Zellerrain von Mariazell nach Lunz am See.. . In 835 m Seehöhe weist der Erlaufsee bei einer Länge von 1,52 km und einer Breite von bis zu 500 m eine Fläche von 0,58 km² auf; seine größte Tiefe beträgt 38 m, die mittlere Tiefe 21,2 m. Das Wasservolumen beträgt etwa 12,4 Millionen Kubikmeter. Dieses Wasservolumen wird bei einer Wasserführung des Abflusses von rund 500 bis 800 Sekundenliter ein- bis zweimal jährlich ausgetauscht. Das Einzugsgebiet des Sees ist etwa 10 km² groß.. . Bei großen Niederschlagsmengen ist ein Anstieg des Seespiegels um einen halben Meter pro Tag durchaus möglich. Der Wasserspiegel wird durch eine Wehranlage beim Abfluss reguliert.. . Unter der Wasseroberfläche liegende Quellen speisen den See ebenfalls. So ist der Seeabfluss wesentlich stärker als der obertägige Zufluss durch die Große Erlauf.. . Die Wassertemperatur an der Oberfläche beträgt im Sommer zwischen 17 und 24 Grad, abhängig von Dauer der Sonneneinstrahlung und Windstärke und -richtung. Es kam schon vor, dass über 3 Wochen eine Temperatur von etwa 22 Grad gemessen wurde, allerdings sind wetterbedingte schnelle Temperaturwechsel sehr häufig. In der Tiefe behält der See den ganzen Sommer über eine Temperatur von etwa 5 Grad. Die Sichtweite beträgt rund 9 m.. . Das raue Klima bewirkt, dass der Erlaufsee durchschnittlich drei Monate im Jahr von einer Eisschicht bedeckt ist.
