Detailed description is Don't let the Keystone XL Pipeline connect the Tar Sands to the US! . The Keystone XL Pipeline is a proposal in the works to transport crude oil from the tar sands in Alberta to the US Gulf Coast. . . The proposed pipeline will run from Hardisty, Alberta to Wood River, IL and Patoka, IL, to Cushing, OK, and then onto Port Arthur, TX and Houston, TX. Along the way it will cross the Sandhills in Nebraska, a large wetland ecosystem, and the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world– which provides drinking water for 2 million people. Portions of the pipeline will also cross an active seismic zone that had a 4.3 magnitude earthquake as recently as 2002.. . Crude oil from the tar sands is also not the kind of energy the U.S should be relying on. In Canada this kind of extraction is hugely controversial: it's energy intensive, highly destructive to the environment, and many sites pollute First Nations territories. Waste from open-pit and in situ mining used for extraction has created the world’s largest impoundments of toxic . waste in tailing ponds. . . Most of the tar sands are found under Canada's Boreale forests, according to Greenpeace, in an area collectively the size of Greece. First Nation communities living downriver from the tar sands have had their traditional hunting and fishing areas polluted and are experiencing significantly higher rates of cancer due to the pollution. . . There are many reasons not to support the tar sands. Keep it out of the US! . .
