Detailed description is This page has been created for those who wish to follow the rehabilitation of 'Get Square'; rescued from the local 'dogger' pens. . On the 22nd of March I rescued a very emaciated gaunt thoroughbred gelding from the local 'dogger' pens. It was an unspeakable scene at the local sale yards that day. The 'final' pens were overflowing with gaunt, ghastly looking figures that once were beautiful horses. My heart broke as I walked through seeing young weak foals laying on the ground breathing very slowly. . . As I wandered through the pens, one 11YO 16HH gelding caught my eye. He has such a kind sad look in his eye and appeared different to the rest. I placed one bid...and nobody else joined it. Sold! . . As I lead him from the pens, the previous owner came up to him. I didn't recognise who she was until she whispered 'goodbye square'. Apparently she could no longer afford feed. I was astounded. She couldn't afford feed, yet bought another horse in better condition? I could only imagine its fate. There is no excuse for leaving a horse to rot in a paddock. I floated this fella home not knowing if he would survive the trip.. . That's when the story really begins. Upon my return home, I bathed Square and tended to his leg wounds. Not to mentioned started his sensitive feeding regime. My mother posted a picture of his brand on Brand Search Only Australia. Within a few hours we had a wealth of background information about this special boy. . . Purchased from the US, this boy sold for $500,000 as a yearling. He raced 7 times internationally placing each time, aside from his last race in Dubai where a tendon injured ended his racing career. Ridden by Australia's Hall of Fame Jockey Darren Beadman, and raced at Caufield. After his racing career ended 'Get Square' stood at Wattlebrae Stud covering around 150 mares before being gelded due to infertility complications and moved on into retirement. He was a gentle soul, even as a stallion.. . After retirement Square competed in dressage and show jumping until he was moved on to another home. I believe this is where he was neglected. . . The story is not over yet. Many pieces of the puzzle are still being discovered. I will post any further information about Square on this page, as discovered.
