Highlighting this beautiful and important medium is the perfect platform to foster community building and reinvention through art education, sustainable art, public installations and creative thinking. As a small rural town in Northern New Mexico, options are limited and badly needed to help youth discover the possibilities rather than accepting the “always been”.. . Raton, NM, is arguably one of the most scenically beautiful locations in New Mexico. Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the blue sky, startling sunsets, prevalent wildlife and perfect climate defy accurate definition until it is experienced. Many years of economic struggle have left this once bustling town with limited job opportunities, dwindling school enrollment, and a general theme of economic helplessness. Revitalization is an ongoing labor but attracting and retaining new citizens and businesses is an uphill battle well worth the undertaking.. . Pivotal to our design is gallery and workshop space for upcycled artists where they can create, display and market this diverse and captivating form of art. Visiting and in house artists will host workshops, school trips, after school programs and summer sessions for area youth. We hope to convey the importance of sustainability while developing creative thinking, empowerment, self esteem and pride to a population of youth with limited outlets for energy and expression. . . Promoting an expanded list of recyclable items for the community 8725 UpCycled Arts will provide a material stream for recycled art while creating a broader outlet for items not traditionally accepted at recycling facilities. Items such as tires and scrap metal are not accepted by the local recycling hub but if brought to us, artisans and students can transform these items into inspired projects. Keeping these items out of the landfill and turning them into public art installations will create a sense of pride and an enhanced view of the possibilities to re-think and re-use otherwise useless items. . . Increasing opportunities for youth will encourage positive projects that may make a small difference in a larger problem. Engaging youth of all ages can spark a creative fire that may keep just one kid from spray painting graffiti or engaging in other destructive activity. Teaching one kid how to turn their art into a small business may change their lifelong economic position; understanding the importance of sustainability at all ages may foster thought processes to drive recycling, sustainable food production and a healthy artistic community contribution. . .
