Detailed description is Our visually welcoming space hosts numerous exhibitions, lectures, and meetings, and luncheons. The Akillian Gallery. . What was nothing more than storage space in the architecture department, became what is now…a sunlit, hospitable environment which hosts both college and community events.. . The original idea for the gallery/meeting space renovation was presented to the Massasoit Community College Trustees by Massasoit architecture students in the late 90’s. Students developed the model, tschedule for construction, and budget, as a formal request for funding the transformation. The project was eventually approved by college administration, and the plans were carried forward by the next incoming class of architecture students. The next phase of the project began with the demolition, then basic construction. The original drawings were refined in preparation to put the project out to bid. Project manager for the winning contractor was coincidentally a former graduate of the Architecture program at Massasoit Community College. Credit for the project goes to Prof. Arthur Rigor daEva (retired), and Prof. Irving Weiner, Chair of the Architecture Department.. . The Gallery opened in the Spring of 2003, and is named in memory of James Akillian, who spent more than twenty years as Assistant Dean and Business Manager at the Canton campus of Massasoit Community College. A plaque dedicated to his honor is proudly displayed as you enter the gallery. . . This visually welcoming space, uniquely designed to maximize natural light, and minimize structural elements, hosts numerous exhibitions, lectures, and meetings throughout the year. Exhibitions include works by the visual arts students, visual arts faculty and craftsman, as well as local art associations and regional artists. The Akillian is available to local community organizations on a limited basis.. . The gallery is located across from the ceramics studio in Rm. 207 which accesses the parking lot to the right of the building as you enter the campus. . .
