I absolutely LOVE Southern Maryland, and no, I am not a lifelong resident.
I hail from Fredericksburg, Va.
I fell in love with Southern Maryland when I fell in love with my husband.
Tony and I began dating in the fall of 2013, and we began the wondrous adventure of experiencing the beauty of southern Maryland together.
As fate would have it, I was given an opportunity to experience southern Maryland from multiple perspectives in a short amount of time.
Our union first led us to a wonderful period of time spent living in Broomes Island, just on the eastern banks of the Patuxent.
Since Tony grew up in St.
Mary’s County (the birthplace of Maryland), we found it fitting to move back across the river when searching for a larger house for our growing family.
We now reside in Oakville, which happens to be directly across the river on the western side.
As my husband is quite the gentlemen and unbeknownst to him a wonderful tour guide (actually, he probably does know this; he thinks he’s good at everything), I have been able to see many of the wonders that this area has to offer, including some sights that lifelong residents haven’t seen.
Unbelievably, southern Maryland is a hidden little gem that is not nearly as well-known as it ought to be, even though it is roughly only an hour from D.C and steeped in history.
Both St.
Mary’s and Charles County find themselves nestled in between the Potomac and the Patuxent River, and Calvert County sits between the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay.
May I suggest sun, sand, and seafood, anybody?! Drop your canoe in the waters at Jefferson Patterson Park in Calvert County.

I’ve failed to mention the canoeing and kayaking at several state parks! The boating! The fishing! Whether you have lived here forever or are relocating to the area, there is so much to discover.
It is a wonderful adventure to live here! We are living the life we love and loving the life we live here in Southern Maryland.
