Detailed description is Art Fix is a multidisciplinary arts collective led by and for artists with mental illness & addictions. We are "fixing" Nipissing region through the arts. Art Fix was founded in 2015 by Amanda Weckwerth (Art Fix Artistic Director) artist with lived experience in mental health and MA psychology graduate and Serena Kataoka, Director of the White Water gallery. The guiding principal behind the program was that engagement in the arts has many benefits on the mental health and well-being of persons living with mental health and additions. Art Fix was additionally created to fill a need in the community, namely that no programs existed for persons with mental health and addiction issues who are considered ‘higher functioning’ in their lives. Furthermore, with knowledge of the lack of educational and awareness raising efforts pertaining to stigma, mental health and addictions, Art Fix sought out to provide a means for empowering those with mental health and addictions to play an active role in shaping community attitudes towards mental health/addictions and stigma surrounding these issues.
