my name is Cindy Beck I have been told I am living in the wrong era.

I love to weave, knitting, crocheting and grow my own food.
My family and I live in a small town in southeastern Michigan.
We live and farm on 2 city lots in the middle of our small town.
We raise chickens for eggs, grown our own vegetables, can and buy our meet from local farmers.
We have a greenhouse and of course a few fruit trees.

In the early 2000's just like most families my husband and I lost our jobs.
With that comes money issues.
We decided to buckle down and see what we can do for our self.
Making laundry detergent, soap, growing our own food and so.
Along with this we started doing research on our food and how to grow it and the benefits.
I remember when I was a kid my Mother always canned all the food we grew.
So why can't I do the same thing.
So gardens soon followed along with a greenhouse.
One of our friends suggested we go to the farmers market and sell our veggies.
We had a great family recipe for granola why not start making the granola and taking it to the markets.
Getting to know the farmers and learning from them has been a wonderful experience.
I found my calling.
I love gardening working out side and working with my hands.
I found a farmer friend that was weaving using the wool from the sheep she was breeding.
She also had goats for fiber and milk.
I started to learn how to weave, wash raw wool, dry, card and spin the wool.
Again loving working with my hands and the animals.
I started to learn more about the milk that she was getting from the goats and all the benefits.
So why not make soap and use the goat milk in it.

I knit, weave and crochet.
My husband has asked many of times what are you going to do with that yarn sell it? I always tell him I have to wait to finish the yarn to see what it wants me to do with it.
Some times it needs to be sold and some times it would end up as a item that is woven, knitted or crocheted.

I have a Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/Backyardsbasics) shop up and running with a few items that I have made out of the yarns I have spun and woven or knitted and crocheted.
Soon I will be listing my goats milk soaps too.

I also go around to local Michigan festivals and set up and sell my items.
I always take my spinning wheel and a small loom with me, of course some knitting needles and crochet hooks.
I love to share my knowledge.
I also bring some raw wool and washed wool with me so everyone can understand what I start with.
