I am currently running for a position on Hazelwood School District's Board of Education. I want to have a voice and a vote when it comes to our district policies, practices, and budget priorities. I want to have an opportunity to start a dialogue about cutting out non-essentials from the budget, and start a real discussion with parents, teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses, principals, etc. about how we can better meet students' educational needs. . I have a Master's degree in Social Work. My concentration in my MSW program was community practice which included instruction in leadership/ administration in the not-for-profit sector. In addition, as an MSW I have considerable training in social policy, advocacy, empowerment, and ethics. I currently hold my Clinical Social Work License (LCSW) which holds me to a very comprehensive code of ethics. . . I have professional experience as a program director in a not-for-profit agency as well as considerable clinical experience working with individuals from all over North County, who come from varied life circumstances.. I have not worked professionally in a school, but I volunteer regularly at my sons' school in HSD. I have studied our district's budget extensively, and done a tremendous amount of self-education in regards to both state and federal education funding guidelines in an effort to provide useful, realistic suggestions to help reconcile our current budget deficit. I also took a leadership role in forming and coordinating the Parent Action Committee (PAC) for Hazelwood Schools which lead the charge in the petition for a state audit of our district. Through my involvement with PAC I was able to work alongside district parents, students, teachers, and other community stakeholders. I listened to better understand the concerns of our community and met with district administrators on a couple of occasions to advocate for our students' educational needs to be the first priority when making budget decisions. More recently, I participated in a budget sub-committee for HSD and continued my advocacy efforts.. . I invite you to message me if you would like additional information about me as a candidate.
