Bourbon Acres Farm is all about growing, developing and becoming more. We moved to Central Oregon the summer of 2014, from Salem. In Salem in our little house among our peaceful neighbors we dug up a large portion of our backyard to grow a garden large enough to sustain our family for 8-9 months out of the year. We also raised 6 chickens and two ducks in our incredibly small backyard.. . As our family grew to two kids we knew we needed more space. We packed our bag and moved to Crooked River Ranch to our 5 acres of paradise. It is not much, but since we enjoy many recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, and snowboarding we knew we didn't want to much "work".. . Our five acres has been treating us well, we got Bourbon Red Turkeys and 28 chickens soon after we moved in. It has been experience living in the desert and raising a much larger flock. Soon we will be adding bees to the small farm. We do not get too much honey here, but my goal is to get some wax in order to make some homemade products. My favorite is chap-stick, out of essential oils and bees wax, it is way better then anything you can buy. I am trying to convince my brother to keep one of my hives on his property, this way I can take advantage of the amazing cherry orchard that he lives on. . . Some of the other activities that we enjoy doing together as a family is hunting and fishing. This was my first year deer hunting, with little luck... I saw a forked horn, but couldn't get a shot in. My husband fortunately was able to fill his elk tag this year. So we processed that fully at home, We made ground meat, jerky, and tanned the hide. I am also taking up fly fishing. I tried it in Alaska a few years ago, but I was annoyed at the bug so I stopped, and never tried again. I just got a trout fly rod for Christmas, I am very excited to take advantage of all of the rivers around here this summer. I hope to be good enough by August when we go to Alaska for 10 day to out fish the guys on the rivers. . . Life is an adventure and we are enjoying it to the fullest.
