Detailed description is Helping the less fortunate at Christmastime.. Shop With A Cop works by using volunteer uniformed officers, firemen, veterans, and citizens from the community to take children shopping for Christmas gifts that their families may not otherwise be able to provide. A uniformed “Hero” or helper provides transportation from the home in a squad car, fire unit, or their personal vehicle and takes the kids shopping with money donated from various resources. After shopping, all then are provided breakfast at the American Legion Post #51 or Moose Lodge 449, their gifts are wrapped and the kids are returned home.. . Donations are solicited from various community businesses, organizations, and individuals through personal appearance, telephone calls, and fliers. The support of the American Legion Post #51 has been instrumental in the success of the program, but the continued support of the community has made the program the success it is today.. . Children participating in this program are selected with the help of local elementary schools and the Buchanan Police Department. Children are selected at the elementary school level, but the entire family of school-aged children participate. The amount of funds available determines the number of children able to participate. Over 99% of funds raised go directly to the kids!! .
