The traditional Blackfeet Indian campground, along the shores of St. Mary’s Lake, have been dedicated to Chewing Blackbones—a courageous warrior and a leader among his people. . Born in 1859, on Two Medicine River, near the place ‘where the Blackfeet made two medicine lodges’. In his youth he participated in battles to defend his homeland. In later years he continued to serve his tribe as a source of information and wisdom. . Although blind the last years of his life he was often called upon to provide accounts of Blackfeet history and give testimony concerning tribal rights against an encroaching civilization which threatened to destroy the way of life he cherished, on the land he loved. . Until his death in 1963 at the age of 104, the Chewingblackbone lodge was sought out at Blackfeet Celebrations and encampments; where he and his family offered true Blackfeet hospitality to fellow campers and visitors.
