Detailed description is CSU Archives and Special Collections are responsible for preserving historical materials from the University’s past and collect from the present Our special collections are focused primarily on African American history, literature and politics; Chicago neighborhood History; and the history of education. We have an extensive collection of rare books, including the Thomas H. Wirth Collection of African –Americana. Our photography holdings, featuring the Steve Balkin Maxwell Street Photographic Collection, is growing. Other important collections include the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Records, the Margaret Smith papers, and the Illinois Commission on Black Concerns in Higher Education. We are also growing our African artifact collection . . Since we hold and document the activities of Chicago State University in the archives we have records relating to various departments, University Administration, and students (i.e. student theses). We determine the historical value of records and dispose of others through the records retention schedule as mandated by Illinois state law. . . .
