CHMR-FM is a campus and community radio station in Newfoundland and Labrador operating out of the campus of Memorial University in St. John's. Its origins date back to 1951, when CHMR started as a HI-FI club and eventually grew into a closed-circuit operation feeding campus cafeterias and society rooms. On October 4, 1974 CHMR was awarded a carrier current licence to broadcast in the Paton College residence on campus. In 1977 CHMR was granted a special licence to broadcast during the Canada Summer Games.. . Finally, on August 7, 1986, Memorial University of Newfoundland Radio Society was granted a licence to operate a student FM station at St. John's on 93.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 50 watts (replacing the carrier current station). CHMR-FM officially signed on air in October 1987. It operated out of the former Thomson Student Centre until 2000, when it moved to a brand new studio located on the 2nd floor of the newly built University Centre on the Memorial campus. . . For decades CHMR-FM has established a strong reputation as an alternative, campus and community station supporting local music and providing an eclectic range of local news and programming.
