Detailed description is On May 9, vote for socialist Chris DiLoreto to serve as the people's voice on the Peterborough Library Board of Trustees. Peterborough is a unique and magical place, and it's blessed with a library to match. I love the Peterborough Town Library. As I embark upon this campaign, I do so with nothing but respect, admiration, and appreciation for the current Board of Trustees, Library Director, and staff. I am not running because I believe anyone on the current team is guilty of poor management or performance. That's not what this is about.. . This is about the future - but first, let's talk about the past. . . The Peterborough Town Library's website describes the climate in 1833, when the library was founded, as a time of "social ferment...of active improvement, of the belief that 'society must direct [humankind] towards moral perfection.'" I'm not so arrogant to lay claim to "moral perfection," but I would instead interpret the phrase in terms of "justice." . . Our library was founded upon these values nearly 200 years ago, and they are values I hold dear today. In 2017, we are at a crossroads. As the library proceeds into this coming period of both physical and program-related enhancements, it is more important than ever for the poor, underemployed, and working class of the Monadnock Region to be represented on the board - to have a voice that ensures that the local library, an institution that exists solely for the purpose of the betterment of all people, provides them the resources and prioritization required to meet their needs. . . The website history goes on to explain that the library was "created on the principle, accepted at Town Meeting, that the public library, like the public school, was deserving of maintenance by public taxation and should be owned and managed by the people of the community, who thereby ceased to be dependent upon private munificence. In this, the Peterborough Town Library was the first – and has, since its founding in 1833, been an integral element of the Peterborough community’s identity.". . I believe that's still true today. I intend to help continue the fantastic work being done by the current trustees and library directorship, while fulfilling the promise of the founding principles of 1833 by applying them in 2017. . . As a socialist, the operating philosophy of the public library - free and open access to all, existing solely for the public good (with no provisions for profit and private gain), promoting knowledge, imparting skills, and facilitating the distribution of public resources - is one I believe should be applied to all of society. Today, the library exists as a microcosmic model of how a just and equal socialist society might be ordered - and as a member of the Board of Trustees, I will safeguard these values and expand their reach as far as is possible. . . It is in this way that I sincerely hope we might - together - build a better world for our children. The character of the Peterborough Town Library's future chapters - as well as that of those written about the town itself - will be determined by the level of our ability to expand and facilitate the delivery of public information, resources, and services to those among us who need them the most. Together, I know we are up for the challenge.
