Detailed description is CW HOG is a regional self-help group that was formed in 1981 to provide recreational opportunities for people of all abilities. The Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CW HOG) was founded in 1981 at Idaho State University (ISU) in Pocatello, Idaho. CW HOG is an outdoor-oriented organization which provides support to individuals with disabilities (including, but not limited to: developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis and other spinal cord injuries), allowing them to participate in recreational activities that would otherwise be inaccessible. CW HOG emphasizes serving individuals with disabilities in a “cooperative” manner: that is, in a mixed setting of people with and without disabilities. CW HOG uses outdoor activities and recreation to promote individual self-esteem, confidence building, and socialization skills in all its participants. Individuals taking part in physical fitness classes, social outings, alpine skiing, and other outdoor adventure activities nurture various personal, physical and mental abilities. CW HOG allows persons with disabilities to become involved in ‘mainstream’ activities with other residents of their own community. Since its inception, the program has been replicated at least 6 times in Canadian and U.S. cities. The organization also received national attention for its “All Abilities Trek to Mount Everest Base Camp, 1998,” the first climb by persons with disabilities to the base camp of the world’s tallest mountain. On June 1st of 2006 CW HOG embarked on a 422 mile expedition of the Salmon River for its 25th anniversary.
