In this story two disciples are walking home after the tragic death of Jesus. They are disheartened and disoriented as they walk, each trying to make sense of all that they had seen and heard. What was even more confusing was that some of the other followers had said that Jesus had risen from the dead. As they were discussing these things Jesus came to them on the road. He asked them what they were discussing and they said that they were talking about Jesus of Nazareth (they didn't recognize that it was Jesus they were talking to). Then they spoke the words that define the story, "we had hoped that he was the one..." You see, before this, in all the time that they had spent with Jesus, they didn't fully understand what or why Jesus had really come to the world. As they walked along the road to a village called Emmaus, Jesus opened their eyes to what he had really come to do: to show the passionate, sacrificial love of God to world. The Emmaus Life is about coming to that same understanding. Each of us has an Emmaus Road story. A story of connection and understanding.
