Detailed description is Celebrating all Eugene Christian School Alumni!.
.
If you attended Eugene Christian School, we would love to hear from you! When did you attend? What are you up to now? How has ECS impacted your life? Eugene Christian School is now in its 61st year of operation!.
.
ECS relocated to its current (and beautiful!) campus at 2895 Chad Drive in the fall of 2012 and currently serves nearly 200 students from pre-school through 8th grade..
.
HISTORY.
.
Eugene Christian School was organized as Emerald Empire Christian School Society, Inc.
at a meeting held in the Free Methodist Church at 18th and Polk in the summer of 1955.
Walter Huss founded the school, which opened with sixty students in grades one through eight that fall.
The school opened its doors at the Eugene Foursquare Church on West 18th and Garfield Avenue.
.
.
The second year, the school met in the facilities of Bethel Danebo Baptist Church on Taney in Northwest Eugene.
Pastor Cross was a great blessing in the organization and stabilization of our new school.
During this year nine acres of property were purchased on West Amazon and Larch Street, and the work began on building the school.
Using volunteer help and the donated leadership of Art Morrow, a local contractor, the building was completed in the spring of 1956 and the school moved to 4500 West Amazon..
.
During the next five or six years the school dropped the 7th and 8th grades and added a kindergarten program.
Some of these years were very lean financially, but God used the dedicated efforts of the parents, teachers and friends to keep the doors of the school open and a high quality of academic achievement and spiritual ministry in full operation..
.
John Bennett was appointed principal and teacher in 1957.
His spiritual leadership and hardworking spirit were a blessing to our school.
Mr.
Bennett helped establish and grow the school during his 17 years as administrator.
.
.
In 1966, construction began on a two classroom addition.
In order to pay for this construction and clear other indebtedness, the school sold three acres of property to EWEB for a substation.
The office was renovated and two classrooms on the south end of building A were added several years later..
.
In 1971, the school launched a drive to add a grade each year until a full Junior High School was operating.
With the completion of our classroom-gym building we left behind two very tough years.
The 1973-74 school year saw the school at three different campuses.
Our kindergarten was located at Calvary Baptist Church and grades six through eight used the basement facilities of First Evangelical Church downtown.
In 1974-75 we used only our own facilities and operated on a split schedule: One group of students coming at 7:30 a.m.
and out at 12:20, and another group came at 12:30 and was dismissed at 5:30 p.m.
Our peak enrollment was 420 students in 1979-80.
.
.
Emerald Empire Christian School changed its name to Eugene Christian School in 1974.
It was also the year the school joined the Association of Christian Schools International.
The school went through the rigorous accreditation process in 1977, and continues to successfully receive full accreditation status after each review.
.
.
.
In 1980, Dr.
Leonard Waitman was hired to replace Mr.
Bennett just as the recession was beginning to take hold in our community.
Many families were forced financially to leave the school as interest rates climbed and jobs became scarce.
Dr.
Waitman was just the man we needed to take us through the next three financially difficult years.
He retired in 1983..
.
ADDITION OF EUGENE HIGH SCHOOL.
.
Our enrollment increased during our 1983-84 school year.
Eugene Christian High School began with the addition of a 9th grade on the Amazon Campus.
It was also Bonnie Conard’s first year as principal.
During the 1984-86 school years the 9th and 10th and then 9-11 grades used the Northwest Christian College campus.
The high school then leased space at Eugene Christian Fellowship (2490 Hilyard Street) and Mark Metzger assumed his position as principal of Eugene Christian High School.
The high school graduated its first senior class in June, 1987.
Ray Beardsley became the principal of the high school in 1988, and Mark Metzger became elementary/middle school principal.
.
.
September 1989, was a time of great change for the high school.
Portable classrooms were purchased and moved to Camp Harlow.
The high school became a separate nonprofit corporation with its own Board of Directors, retaining the name of Eugene Christian High School.
In June 1991, they became a part of Willamette Christian School and changed the name to Willamette Christian High School.
In 1993, the school was disbanded..
.
KINDERGARTEN, ELEMENTARY, AND MIDDLE SCHOOL CONTINUE.
.
The fall of 1992 brought an increase in enrollment of almost forty students and a change in the administration of the school.
Mrs.
Susan Baurer was hired as the interim principal for the 1992-93 school year then became administrator in 1993..
.
Eugene Christian School’s new milestone was a gift of $118,000 that was designated for performing arts related enhancement.
The school’s gym underwent significant renovation and remodeling.
On November 16, 1995, the new Tishon Theater of the Arts was dedicated to its benefactor, Martha Tishon Bartzat..
.
In 2006, the new Development Director, Laura Purkey, began to reconnect with former families, former staff and alumni.
In April 2007, with the help of many volunteers, we celebrated our 50th anniversary.
More than 600 people attended the event including alumni, many former faculty and former Board members.
An annual alumni event became a tradition.
We began a campus renewal project to upgrade classrooms and the playground, which positioned us for the next exciting phase in the history of the school..
.
When founded in 1955, the school was built in southeast Eugene where families with school-age children were concentrated.
In recent decades, the population has shifted.
The Board had sought for several years to move into the north Eugene area to access and better serve the growing population of young, especially Christian, families.
In 2008, the Board organized a Strategic Planning Committee to develop a plan to relocate.
We expanded the Board of Directors to include former Board members who could provide the valuable leadership necessary to guide the school into a new era.
.
.
In 2011, after much prayer and strategic planning, the Board unanimously approved the purchase of a perfectly suited building at 2895 Chad Drive, which was the former Koke Industrial Printing Company.
God miraculously provided a buyer for the West Amazon Drive campus and it was sold to Ridgeline Montessori Charter School.
Eugene Christian School vacated the campus in June 2012, and during the summer major renovation work was done to convert the facility into a beautiful new school.
The renovation work took longer than expected, so school opened in September 2012 in the children’s wing of Eugene First Baptist Church.
The dedication of the new campus and first day of school in the new building was October 9, 2012..
.
Susan Baurer retired in June 2012, and administrator Leo Limoges, took over the reins to oversee the renovation project and the establishment of Eugene Christian School at the new location.
ECS saw a 40% increase in enrollment when school opened in 2012.
With the new growth and the larger campus facility, ECS has added a new computer lab, Spanish program, separated playgrounds, additional classes to accommodate the increase in enrollment and a performing arts center, which also is leased by One Love Church.
.
.
In the summer of 2015, our current administrator, Jared Mlynczyk, was hired to lead ECS.
Recently, ECS has integrated technology and emphasized a rotational-small group instruction model.
Chapel, spiritual formation, and a Biblical worldview continues to be the heart and soul of the school.
Currently, enrollment is near 200 students from preschool through 8th grade..
.
In addition to instructional changes, ECS hosts an annual Christian music concert and an apologetics conference.
It is also making plans to renovate its 12,000 sq.
ft gym space in the spring of 2017..
.
God has been faithful every step of the way.
We are on a mission to develop students who seek (first) the Kingdom of God and secondly, have a significant impact in our culture through relationships, families, and vocation.
