The Fairview Welcome Table was launched in April, 2011, in response to the growing and serious need of hundreds of people in the Fairview and Reynolds communities who are unable to afford to purchase quality, nutritious food and who would benefit from regular community companionship. . . The Fairview Welcome Table is based upon the guiding principles of other Welcome Tables operating in the Asheville area. Barbara Trombatore served as a volunteer at the Black Mountain Welcome Table for six months. She began to talk with people in her own community of Fairview about a similar need there. In December 2010 an organizational meeting was held with people in Fairview who shared her vision. After meeting monthly, and with much planning and preparation, the first Fairview Welcome Table was open to serve lunch the first week of April 2011. . . Operations. . 1. Since its inception, the Fairview Welcome Table has fed an average of 74 people each week at Fairview Christian Fellowship, which generously donates its fellowship hall and kitchen space. The local community garden (The Lord’s Acre), Flying Cloud Farm, Hickory Nut Gap Farm and other area farms have donated thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables. To date, a total of approximately 12,000 meals have been served.. . 2. On December 2, 2011, the Fairview Welcome Table began providing a healthy fruit snack for needy children at Fairview Elementary School as part of a school backpack program. These children have been identified by the school as food insecure and they now receive two to three pieces of fresh fruit each Friday that they take home for the weekend. Our supply of healthy snacks coincides with and complements the Manna Food Bank backpack program. Fairview Welcome Table has been able to continue this support for the past four school years..
