Put a different way, Aikido is self-defense through nonresistance, not strength against strength—in yielding is strength. An Aikidoka (Aikido student) evades an attack, takes advantage of a weakness in balance, and applies a technique to resolve a situation, oftentimes without either party being injured. There is no malicious intent involved, meaning, an Aikidoka does not try to beat someone up or hurt them. The goal is to peacefully coexist with others.. . Aikido was conceived in the early part of the century by the late Morihei Ueshiba (1883 – 1969). Ueshiba mastered various forms of martial arts, most notably Jujitsu (unarmed defense, Kenjitsu (sword) and Sojitsu (spear) in developing Aikido. He wanted to establish an art which was noncompetitive and less destructive than his previous training. Thus, Aikido emphasizes neither street fighting nor competitive tournaments, but neutralization rather than the defeat at of an attacker.. . Aikido is a sophisticated martial art with techniques that allow you to decide how much force is necessary for a particular situation by blending and harmonizing with the attacker’s energy. Aikido teaches you to relax and look at the situation, then respond clearly and directly. Aikido philosophy and principles must be understood before the art can be fully realized. Relaxation, nonresistance, centering and balance are key elements in the foundation of aikido. We use these principles with circular motion to control an attacker. Throughout training a student learns to control the body which leads to an appreciation for the artistic elements of aikido. Ultimately our training in aikido leads to our goal of better self-confidence on and off the matt.. . A class in Aikido stresses form, mutual cooperation, awareness of others and the coordination of the body’s movement while maintaining a clam state of mind.. . It’s easy to get overwhelmed in the beginning. The original system of Aikido has over 2000 individual techniques and takes many years to learn. We have an advantage at Gentle Wind in that we practice a system derived from the original by one of the founder’s students, Kenji Tomiki. Tomiki Aikido takes the original 2000 + techniques and combines the similarities into an easy-to-learn format. It still takes effort and hard work to master Aikido, but the Tomiki system is designed to allow the student to raidly develop proficiency.. . Aikido is a martial art designed to defend and better oneself and the world. Although classes can be fun, they should also be approached with a serious mental attitude as if every technique has life and death consequences. In this, it differs from other pastimes such as baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.. . There is a Japanese concept called shugyo, meaning austere training. This means that there will be a certain amount of hardship as you practice from day to day. Often, you can have a really great practice one session, then have a rough one the next. This can go on for months or even years. You will eventually come to understand that the only real opponent is yourself. The key to shugyo is the belief that through training and sticking with it, you will forge a new, stronger spirit. If you let outside distractions or other activities interfere with regular practice, you will hinder this improvement. This is why it takes a sincere mind and perseverance to practice this, or any other martial art.. . Having said all of that, it doesn’t take some inherent power or talent to discover the benefits of Aikido. Many people who are now accomplished students didn’t think they’d ever be that way.
