Glenn Acres Farm Mission Statement. . Our goal is to develop and produce the highest quality pasture raised and finished livestock. Our products are beef cattle, meat goats, and high quality fescue hay. We achieve these goals by following these farm standards:. - Our herds are raised in a low stress environment to ensure animal comfort, growth, and the highest quality end product.. - We maintain closed herds of cattle and goats to exercise bio-security.. - We do not engage in straight line breeding.. - We follow the guidelines of the Beef Checkoff Program.. - We treat animals humanly and with respect.. - We follow the vaccination schedules recommended by our associated veterinarian.. - We ONLY use antibiotics to treat sick animals under the supervision of our associated veterinarian.. . . How we achieve our farm goals:. . - Cattle. . o Our long term goal for cattle production is to produce F1 cross Sengus cattle (Senepol/Red Angus cross breeds) for increased hybrid vigor. This cross maximizes the heat tolerance of both breeds as well as resistance to southern parasites.. o We have selected herd sire bulls with the emphasis on low birth weight with optimum weaning weights, calving ease, dame milk production, and mothering.. o Our “backbone” herd of Red Angus Cows is bred each year to produce heifers to use in the cross breed effort.. o Red Angus bull calves produced by our “backbone” will be offered as virgin 2 year old bulls for sale.. o F1 cross Sengus heifers are offered as breeding stock to local farms and buyers to allow them to produce superior commercial cattle.. o F1 cross Sengus bulls will be banded at birth and offered as 2 year old pasture raised and finished steers each May/June.. o We follow a controlled breeding and calving schedule to meet these goals.. . . - Goats. . o Our long term goal for goat production is to produce commercial meat goats (Boar/Kiko cross breed) to maximize browsing and pasture use.. o Our primary herd sire (strong Boar influenced Sire) is used to breed our mature does (Kiko/Boar crosses) to produce herd replacement doelings and sale buckling.. o Our secondary herd sire (strong Kiko influenced sire) is used to breed our second generation does and yearling doelings. All doelings from this sire are offered as breeding stock to local farms and buyers. Bucklings are offered for sale.. o Our bucklings are offered each spring as intact bucks for both future herd sires and meat goats.. o We follow a controlled breeding and kidding season to meet these goals.. . - Hay Production. . o Hay is produced with annual soil testing, herbicide use as necessary, and fertilized in March and after each cutting.. o Primary hay production is round bale production for storage and handling ease.. o We strive to produce approximately 500 small square bales each year.. o Hay is tested for quality each year.. o Excess hay is offered for sale in late January each year.. o Goal is to limit feeding of hay to less than 90 days per year.. . - Pasture Management. . o Pastures are managed as a rotational grazing system.. o Pastures are fertilized each February to allow early green up and growth of fescue grasses.. o Sacrifice pastures are designated each fall to over winter cattle and goats.. o Rye and clover is sown in all other pastures to provide early spring forage and limit hay usage.. . . . . .
