Detailed description is Our mission is to engage Asian American students in the critical inquiry and divergent thinking that will prepare them to succeed over the long-term. Our curriculum is centered around critical reading, writing, and analysis, which we will teach through an ethnic studies lens. Ethnic studies is an interdisciplinary field primarily focused on race, ethnicity, and identity. Numerous research studies, including one recently published by Stanford University, show that high school students who take ethnic studies courses have increased academic performance and college-readiness. . . Aside from the significant academic benefits of ethnic studies, we chose this curriculum because it focuses on student identity. Colleges want students who are able to think critically and reflect on their position in the world. Over the course of the summer, we will help students develop a strong sense of identity and awareness of their unique narratives and strengths; then, we will support students in honing this understanding into a strong college essay. Throughout the program, we will assign college-level readings and assignments to increase students’ preparedness for undergraduate rigor. . . * How can your program help me/my child get into college?. . A lot of Asian & Asian American parents believe that test preparation is one of the most important factors in their child’s college application process. We know because our parents were among them! After going to college and graduate school, we’ve been able to see the admissions process from the other side and know that admissions committees are looking for much more-- how a student thinks, what motivates them, and how critical they are in their thinking and analysis. . . This is how we’re different from other summer enrichment programs. Our curriculum focuses on developing critical reading, writing, and discussion skills in order to holistically improve students’ applications and help them be a star in college. Throughout the program, we will be engaging in college-level texts and seminar discussions so that students get a sense of what the rigor of college is like, and be prepared to succeed once they set foot on campus. . . * What networking opportunities will there be?. . Each Friday, our students will have the opportunity to engage in workshops led by guest lecturers, who are our colleagues in the New York City metro area. We’ll connect them with young professionals in a variety of fields-- ranging from law to medicine, finance to engineering, academia to the arts-- so that they can better understand the skills they’ll need to succeed in their desired careers. If you’re particularly interested in a certain path, let us know and we can arrange opportunities to connect you with someone who can help you along the way. . . With parental consent, we are also planning to take students on several college visits, museum tours, and academic- and career-related field trips, which is covered in our program cost.
