Agassiz Elementary School is a Chicago neighborhood public school for the area of central Lakeview bordered roughly by Belmont, Halsted, Wrightwood, and Lakewood Avenues. We attract students from within and outside of this attendance area with our national award-winning fine and performing arts magnet program as well as our highly-respected Autism program. . . Agassiz offers a project-based, investigative learning approach to science, math, language arts, and social studies. As an arts magnet cluster school, we integrate the fine, technological, and performing arts throughout the curriculum. We also emphasize the use of technology in each subject area.. . You may or may not be aware that Chicago Public Schools funds only a portion of the faculty and programs available at Agassiz Elementary School. For example, currently CPS will only pay for, on average, one regular classroom teacher for every thirty students, either a physical education teacher or a librarian (not both), and either a music or a visual arts teacher (not both). In addition CPS does not fund extracurricular activities such as sports programs. Therefore school discretionary funds must be used to supplement CPS allocations in order to continue to keep class sizes relatively small, provide fine arts and athletic programs etc. Discretionary funds come from three different sources: the federal government through No Child Left Behind legislation, the state government through the Supplemental General State Aid program and private fundraising efforts. The amount of discretionary money Agassiz has received from the federal and state government has decreased over the past couple of years and is expected to continue declining in the coming years. Therefore the role of private fundraising is more important than in the past in the effort to provide quality education to Agassiz students. . . We are making significant strides in the areas of community outreach, enrollment, and test scores. We have introduced Baby and Toddler programming six days per week and provide fun annual school and community sponsored events to serve the community. Over the last several years neighborhood enrollment has risen, as have our test scores. Agassiz students currently test in the top 1/5th of Chicago Public Schools. . .
