He joined Flynn’s Tree Service a few years later and, after high school, volunteered in the army as a heavy equipment operator. After completing his service and returning from Alaska, Hugh went on to work in a Lee paper mill for more than four decades. He hunted, trapped, fished, gardened, bowled, golfed, did tree work and sold firewood throughout his adult life. He had a huge breadth of knowledge about plants and could identify any kind of tree from a great distance. Watching him drop a tree was like watching an artist at work; every movement was precise and had a level of elegance that one doesn’t normally associate with tree work.. . As one would imagine, our grandfather came into contact with a lot of people throughout his life.
