ART 390: Imaging Research Fellows. . “Mapping Baybrook: Arts, History, and Culture in the Classroom and Community” engages members of the Baybrook Community in an innovative civic project that brings together two UMBC classes from different fields—AMST 422: “Preserving Places, Making Spaces in Baltimore” from the Department of American Studies and ART 390: “Imaging Research Fellows” Social Civic in Practice, the Department of Visual Arts. Accessing diverse practices in the fields of spatial humanities, public history, social entrepreneurship, visual and aural arts, social design, and civic engagement, this collaboration will culminate in a public event in the South Baltimore community of Baybrook. To archive the project goals, UMBC students will engage the surrounding Baltimore community to produce original historical research and arts and design projects focused on issues of environmental justice.. . Professor Bradley and King will introduce to the students a variety of methods from each of their disciplines that the students might use in small groups to gain an interdisciplinary approach to the complex environmental issues that exist in industrial locations such as Brooklyn-Curtis Bay. Students will gain a working knowledge about environmental justice through the disciplines. Included in the early part of the course will be case studies that the student might adapt and or reference and to experiment with to explore a more profound result. Students will learn about historical figures, such as Rachel Carson, who wrote a significant text called Silent Spring. Students will learn about artists such as Mel Chin, who use environmental knowledge to design potent artworks that draw attention to the complex issues of toxic places. Included in the wider collaboration with Marc Steiner, students will produce a series of podcasts that will be distributed via FM low power transmitters in and around the neighborhood of Baybrook. Several of the interviews from the course will be produced for WEAA radio program. Students will be responsible for conducting the interviews, field recording and postproduction, with the guidance from Marc Steiner and his production crew..
