Detailed description is Provide an introduction into Jamaica’s socio-political history as well as to the contemporary issues relevant to the island nation and its people. Program Location. Jamaica is the third largest island nation in the Caribbean region. It encompasses a wide range of identities, languages, religions, cultures and intertwining histories. . . The island nation is approximately 581 miles south of the United States (Miami, Florida). It is a developing nation of approximately 2.7 million people.. The Jamaica Service-Learning Program (JSLP) will be located in Northern Kingston at the University of the West Indies at Mona. . . The campus is situated in a lush valley embraced by Long Mountain to the south and the southernmost peaks of the famous Blue Mountain Range to the North. Mona is perhaps one of the most scenic areas in Greater Kingston, with the surrounding mountains providing a verdant backdrop which enhances the serene atmosphere of the campus.. . This study abroad program/course is a faculty-led program offered by the Black Studies Department and the Center for International Programs at SUNY New Paltz. The program provides students with an introduction into Jamaica’s socio-political history as well as to the contemporary issues relevant to the island nation and its people.. . Through an interdisciplinary approach the program/course will introduce students to how the Jamaican cultural identity evolved into its contemporary form. The course is organized thematically but it proceeds in chronological order to focus on the major socio-political, economic and cultural period of change in the Jamaican society. . . Site visits, lectures/discussions with Jamaican faculty and community leaders, and service projects will reinforce the course content.. .
