My great grandfather and grandfather both drove truck and eventually opened and operated a small gas station and mechanics shop on the only corner Creekside has to offer. They did this and in the 1920’s, at some point, decided to dabble in the planting of Christmas trees. It wasn’t until 1950 where the first seedlings and Christmas trees were planted, grown, and eventually harvested to be sold for profit. Officially, the business was established under the name Clair Johnston and Sons in 1952.. . Amid their success, in 1957, the first of many buildings was established. This main building, which is still the main focus of operation on the farm, has been added onto a number of times over the course of the next thirty years. The first addition was built 17 years later into the side of the hill that the original barn was constructed against to help create a natural cool cellar. This helped in aiding the preservation of the live seedlings and transplants before they are ready to be shipped out or put into the ground. The next addition, in 1984, was the bottom most portion of the barn to help store the various machines and implements the farm requires. The final addition two years later was a large heated room that allowed for a nice open inside working space. Additionally, four buildings and in 2012 a greenhouse have been added to the mix with plans for one more – hopefully in 2014!. . Johnston Nursery has been around a long time and with that comes a few noteworthy things. The 1970’s held the highest single year wholesale Christmas tree sale which was around 18,000 in one year. The highest amount of seedlings the company ever sold came in the 80’s at just over 1 million.The most notable item on the list would be that my grandfather, Beryl, is largely credited as the inventor . of what a lot of people know today as the Christmas tree baler. He built the very first baler of its kind in 1959 and over the next ten years built and sold roughly 100 balers in total. Today, Johnston Nursery still uses the first and the last baler that he built at the farm to process every single Christmas. . . Times and markets change. Presently Johnston Nursery is 387 acres split between four properties. Approximately 50 acres is reserved for the seedlings business everything else is planted with Christmas trees or soon to be. Not much to be said about our seedling business anymore but the Christmas tree business is our passion. We still do a healthy dose of wholesale orders as well as run two retail lots – one at our home location and one at the Meadows ice cream shop in Indiana, PA.. . So, now that you know that -- you’re probably wondering how we got from planting Christmas trees in the 20’s, to landscaping almost 100 years later? I’d love to tell you that it was years of research and studying of the industry that led it to happen but that’s little misguided. Truth is, it exists solely because two college kids with two push mowers and an ad in the Indiana Gazette made it happen.. . I’ve worked a vast array of jobs in my time, whether it was food service, telemarketing, or even for my dad on the farm. I quickly realized that I was not happy working for someone. Even working for my father in college I felt little desire to not only over achieve but to even achieve anything. So I formulated . a half assed plan with my best friend, Andy Campbell, and we both quit our jobs with the intent on buying the two mowers and going to work in 2006 while I was still trying to finish my degree at IUP. Things didn’t go terribly at first. We were making just as much money as we were before with more free time. Of course once winter came we both had a tough time making ends meet with the limited work and still being in school. In 2007 Andy went back to work for someone else while I filled time at the farm and kept trying to build a clientele. . . In 2008 I graduated from IUP (finally) and in the next four years I devoted myself to making connections and growing a business that could support not just me but hopefully other people as well. I am proud to say that in the spring of 2012 Andy was hired back into the company. He is presently managing and operating with the crews that service our 100+ grass mowing and snow removal clients. We will employ at least seven others this spring to fall season and hope to continue to hire more as we grow. . . What does the future hold for us? . . One of our biggest goals this year is to build and move into a new building below the original building on the nursery property. We hope to have a small storefront/office space available as well as our own mulch yard and retail location. . . Short of that I do not know what the future will hold – good or bad. What I do know is I am going to make sure we continue the consistent, personal, and honest effort that has not only gotten JNL to this point but has kept my family in business for 75 years.. . . . N
