Dr. Cooper gives a short history of weekly newspaper publishing in Key West:. . Once upon a time, there were lots of weekly newspapers in Key West. In fact, there were so many that some called the competition the "paper wars." But that war has been over for quite some time.. . When the first issue of KWTN hit the streets on January 7, 1994, there were already two other non-daily newspapers on the scene: Island Life and Solares Hill. Both of those papers took long vacations during the slow summer season. KWTN was the first true weekly in Key West, publishing 52 weeks per year. Island Life soon went out of business and Solares Hill, in financial difficulty,was absorbed by the Key West Citizen and is now published as a Citizen Sunday insert. Other newspapers came and went: Mark Howell's Islander, Winston Burrell's Island News, and Charlie Ramos' Morning Star. And there were others we can't even remember.. . They failed because they had no real reason to exist. Our reason to exist is to try to make a difference. And we've been doing that for more than 15 years. Key West the Newspaper is the island's oldest independent weekly newspaper.. . From the beginning, KWTN has also been designed to be an extremely effective advertising-carrying vehicle.
