Detailed description is Veteran owned and operated dog training service Though I got my start in the dog training world much earlier, it wasn't until 2010 that I joined the Army and received a formal education of dog training and behavior methodology. I graduated from Vohne Liche Kennels in 2011 as a part of their new military program called the "Tactical Explosive Detection Dog" program. The goal of training our dogs was to have an offleash reliable bomb detection dog capable of operating in intense battlefield situations on the front lines.. . In order to truly prepare our dogs and ourselves for this, we trained in a great deal more than how to sniff out bomb odor. Reliable obedience, socialization, behavior modification, animal first aid, canine nutrition, and behavior studies were all part of the cirriculum. Obedience had to be top notch in order to be trusted off leash, with all manner of proofing against various distractions. Most dogs have trouble listening when someone rings the doorbell, my experience proofs against things such as gun fire and explosions. Proper socialization is just as important for a working dog as it is for pet dogs, perhaps even moreso. With the amount of feral dogs and other animals we would see over seas, an unsocialized dog would be overwhelmed and lose sight of the mission. Essentially, to train reliable working dogs we had to also train our dogs to be able to go anywhere with us without worrying about them having bad manners, being reactive, or not listening. . . After leaving the Army, I realized that these same values were beneficial to pet dogs as well. A disobient dog who chooses distractions over listening to their owner can lead to danger, after all it just takes one time of blowing you off to chase a squirrel into a busy street. And a poorly socialized dog can cause problems when introducing them to your friends or other dogs. In the end, we all just want a dog we can take anywhere with us, and my training provides that. I graduated from a very highly funded government program that would unapologetically fail more than 50%, on average, of its applicants because they only wanted the best.. . Immediately upon graduation, I went overseas to Afghanistan where I had further training and certifications under the Military Police before heading out to the field working out of a small Combat Outpost manned by only about 60-70 soldiers total. At this point my training and studies were now being tested in the field, and when we weren't outside the wire we were training on our own time. It is this discipline, field experience, and formal education that I bring to my dog training now.. . The philosophy we were taught, and I still follow, was characterized as "motivational, reward based training." A dog who wants to perform for you is a lot more likely to perform your desired behaviors whether it be bomb detection, obedience or even something as simple as manners. But make no mistake, even though it was known as "reward based" we still studied and implemented proper aversive control in a healthy balance. Just like a bomb sniffer who is motivated and enjoys his job will be much more reliable and trustworthy to do his job, so too is a pet dog who is told to come will be infinitely more likely to follow through if they also have the desire to come. Unfortunately, dogs can find their own motivation and rewards through what we as dog owners call bad or undesirable behaviors, e.g. jumping on guests, bolting from open doors, and even aggression and these can all be self rewarding. This is where proper aversive control comes in. Being the leader that your dog wants to follow, and listens to your boundaires, is the type of dog you can take anywhere with you without worry or stress, giving you and your dog a more free and enjoyable life.. . After leaving the Army and the Military Working Dog world in 2013, I began my work with pet dogs in the private world.
