Detailed description is A small family farm in rural southwestern Wisconsin Our farming story begins in North Carolina in 2014, when Rosemary and I moved from a rental house in suburban Raleigh to a small plot in the country. Together with our four young rambunctious boys, our goal at first was simply to raise as much of our own food as possible, and to enjoy the benefits of a rural lifestyle as I continued to commute to my teaching job in the nearby city of Raleigh. But our first three goats soon became a dozen, and then two dozen, and we improved the bloodlines enough that people began to travel from as far as Alabama to purchase goats from us. The small garden plot that had at first yielded nothing but weeds began to produce so much that we sold vegetables to friends and colleagues, in addition to milk, eggs, and whole broiler chickens. We had always joked about farming full time, but soon we began to consider it seriously.. . Since we were already outgrowing our few-acre plot in North Carolina, we made the decision to move back to Wisconsin in spring of 2017 and purchase Rosemary’s parents’ 40-acre farm in rural southwestern Wisconsin, near La Crosse, on the border with Minnesota. We made the transition along with a starter herd of goats in April 2017. Although it was not an easy decision for me because it meant giving up a teaching job that I loved, both Rosemary and I believe that it will be the best thing for our family. Rosemary’s parents built a house for themselves on a few acres they carved off of the farm property. The boys have their grandparents, and Rosemary her parents, for neighbors. I, for my part, have a resident expert mechanic and all-around handyman in the person of my father-in-law.. . Three years of small-time farming in North Carolina have left us with no illusions about the difficulty of the task of farming full time. But we are doing our best as we get underway.
