HISTORY:. . Gustav Blumhagen, founder of Lakeside Decorating, was officially established in 1979 in St. Laurent, MB. Gustav and his family made the move to Canada in 1977, after visiting family who already lived in St. Laurent/Winnipeg. Frank asked him "Why?", which Gustav replied "Do you hear that?" *referring to the big wide open of the property and community*, Which Frank replied "NO, I don't hear anything", Gustav's reply was "That is why".. ​Gustav worked in Winnipeg, hating the commute and wanting to run his own business, working for himself rather than someone else. Back in Germany - 1950s he had already started going off on his own, continuing painting and masonry, this time on his own. Carrying tons of experience, seemed like the logical thing to do.. When Lakeside officially started Gustav was on his own for the first half year, until things picked up. Once that happened he hired an extra laborer. Gustav's business flourished, especially once his son-in-law (Frank Bruce Jr.) joined the crew and helped expand business in 1982. Gustav sold Lakeside to his son-in-law, Frank Bruce Jr. in 1992, but remained active to keep himself busy.. Gustav loved his 4 grand-daughters very much, especially the 2 back in Germany, which he saw seldom. He loved the outdoors, playing jokes on his kids and grand-kids (hiding behind trees with a garden hose waiting patiently), playing black-jack, working in his garden and keeping busy. Gustav was a well-humored man and is still talked about today.. . FRANK. Frank Bruce Jr. had a career in Computer Programming when he also had the vision of running his own business. Frank also wasn't a fan of commuting and in 1982; freshly married, he decided to take the risk and continue Gustav's vision. Frank worked long hours to establish Lakeside as a new owner, even having as much as 8 employees at one time. Frank was preparing to slow Lakeside down in 2015, to prepare for retirement when his son-in-law expressed interest.... again seeing the same vision that started all those years ago. Frank proudly started to train and teach his son-in-law the "ropes" of the business & in May of 2016, Frank was able to semi-retire. He continues to teach and work with Lakeside being a valuable member of this family-owned & operated business.. . TRAVIS. Travis Hofer's background is in Agronomy. Graduating from the University of Manitoba in 2009 and continuing his employment with a large Agriculture company. Although Travis loved the work, (and also growing up on a beef farm) he had to re-evaluate his career aspirations when his allergies worsened. Always having an interest in Frank's business and also being a hands-on type of person, he decided to make the change in career. Travis worked alongside Frank for 2 years, before officially taking over May 2016.
