Detailed description is Madisonville Community College's Surgical Technology Program. The surgical technologist is trained to perform specific functions in the operating room and is a vital member of the surgical team under direct supervision of a doctor or registered nurse. Surgical technologist prepare supplies and equipment and often assist in preparing patients for surgery. Their duties include preparing the operating room with instruments, equipment, and all sterile supplies required for an operation. The surgical technologist is responsible for passing instruments during surgery, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and counting all instruments, needles, and sponges used during an operation. They may also apply post-operative dressings or assist with the application of casts. Students will also learn how to sterilze instruments, handle special drugs, solutions, supplies, and equipment used for specific procedures. . The program is two semesters, after finishing all Gen Ed courses. . Associate Degree. Courses Required: ENG 101 Writing I, BIO 137 Human Anatomy & Physiology I w/ Lab, BIO 139 Human Anatomy & Physiology II w/ Lab, MAT 110 Applied Mathematics or MAT 150 College Algebra, Heritage or Humanities, Social& Behavioral Sciences, Computer/Digital Literacy course (CIT 105 or other qualifying course) or skill demonstrated by competency exam, CLA 131 Medical Terminology from Greek or Latin or AHS 115 Medical Terminology or OST 103 Medical Office Terminology, BIO 225 Medical Microbiology or BIO 226 Principles of Microbiology or BIO 227 Principles of Microbiology w/ Lab or BIO 118 Microbes in Society, SUR 109 Introduction to Surgical Technology. .
