Detailed description is I am Charles City resident campaigning for the office of Mayor for Charles City. This is my story. I was raised in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 2005. I started my career with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department right out of high school and have been employed there ever since. I plan on continuing my career as a Deputy Sheriff. I am the son of Michelle DeVries and David (Jan) Lovik. My brother is Lee who operates his own business in Floyd County. I have a wonderful wife named Josslynn who is employed as a teacher at IC School. We have a beautiful daughter named Avada who is 8 months old. As many people can relate, I was looking to do something more. With Sheriff Crooks being elected into office in 2017, he wanted us as deputies to be more involved with our community. I took this as my great opportunity to see how I could be more involved in the community. As I was researching possibilities, I started looking into being Mayor of Charles City.. . We live in a beautiful city; however, it could be better. So instead of just voicing concerns, I want to take action and do my part to make our city better. As a law enforcement officer, I see the harm of how section 8 housing impacts our community WHEN IT’S ABUSED. I’m not saying it’s a bad program by any means. I know it truly does help those who need it. I certainly don’t think it should be promoted in other communities. We want people that work and want to be productive members of our community. I never plan on leaving Charles City. I am passionate to do my part and continue to move Charles City forward. . I also believe term limits should be set for council members and the office of Mayor. It’s no different than any other office. It should be set at a two-term maximum. I believe this creates new leadership and ideas for our community. I hope by running for a political office, it will encourage others to realize they have a voice, and as members of the community, have the right to run for office themselves. . . I also want to implement and create programs for our youth. We have a kayak course that could be used in the summer months and teach our kids how to properly use it under supervision. I am also interested in looking at our city golf courses and create ideas of how we could get the youth more involved. These are just some of my ideas. We have numerous parks in Charles City that could be better utilized. I also would like to implement a Junior City Council Program which would be collaborative with the school. I believe having students shadow the Council/Mayor could really strengthen our community. Let’s face it, they are the future leaders of our world. . I have been approached (and have questioned myself) why we do not have a better department store. I truly believe with the size and location of our community, we have a very good chance of getting a bigger and better department store. I will fight very hard for this. . . I am open to hearing your comments and concerns for our community. It’s time for a change for Charles City. It would be an honor to have your vote on November 7, 2017.
