He touched those around him in a way that not many can and left an everlasting imprint on their lives. A fun-loving fearless jokester, Mikey was always able to bring a smile to the faces of those around him. He was both mischievous and talented, sometimes a recipe for laughter and disaster. Mikey enjoyed drawing, mixing music, pulling pranks and spending quality time with his friends and family.. . Mikey spent much of his young adult life wrapped up in the whirlwind world of substance abuse. What began as experimentation quickly became a full blown addiction. He struggled hard to find his bearings and although lost for a short time, fought hard to persevere. Mikey was tough yet gentle, brilliant yet naive, and even through his battle of darkness he brought light into many lives. During this uphill battle he made great strides toward becoming a stronger person, one free of addiction. While in recovery he set a goal of becoming an Addiction Counselor. He wanted to help others out of the obscurity addiction brings as he knew first-hand how quickly it could swallow the person you once were.. . In the summer of 2005, Michael Calvin Hamblin’s recovery was underway. During a visit to the dentist that summer, he had to have a tooth extracted. The tooth wouldn’t clot and so the dentist sent him to the ER where some inconsistent testing raised concerns about his health. The following day he was admitted to the hospital because the results of his blood work were alarming. Ultimately, everyone’s worst fears were confirmed: At just 23 years of age, Mikey had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).. . In the 6 months that followed Mikey underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, while his family and friends were tested for a bone marrow match. No one can say for sure if his addiction had weakened his immune system beyond the point of remission. Sadly, he passed away just 8 short months after his unexpected diagnosis, just a few months shy of his 24th birthday.
