Detailed description is This Facebook page is to update all who are interested on the progress being made at the Myrtle Theatre, and to share pictures new and old In 1914 the Slater brothers built the building that is now most commonly known as 'the old TV Appliance/Radioshack' building. In it's early years the building was glorious. The main level housed the Myrtle Theater, which was used as a performing arts venues for the many performers that would come to town. The basement was a cafe and barber shop with an exterior entrance that was accessible down a flight of stairs that originally opened to Main Street. And the top two stories of the building were home to the Waldorf Hotel. The remains of the stairway are still there, unfortunately covered and decayed by a century's worth of remodeling. . . The Slater Bros building has seen many transformations in the course of a century, including several remodels to turn the old theater into retail space. It is more commonly remembered as having been a Ben Franklin store and as a TV/Appliance and Radioshack. . . The top two stories have been remodeled to house apartments rather than hotel rooms. Currently 8 apartments are finished and rented. We aim to finish a 9th apartment within the next few weeks and will complete construction on 2 more apartments soon. In the unfinished apartments, the layout of the original hotel rooms are still clear, with the original flooring still in some of the rooms, albeit extremely deteriorated and damaged. The original 'water closet' still exists with a large claw-foot bathtub and an early 1900s style toilet. The basement still shows hints of what the space must have looked like in it's original state. Hints as to the original decor and design of the building can still be found if looking in the right spots. For example, inside what is now a broom closet and what once was the hotel check-in area, the original wood trim still exists.. . Through the years the building has been changed and what was likely once a lovely space with a beautiful ambiance is now an empty, seemingly forgotten, abandoned, and lifeless shell. We aim to change that.. . It is our goal to revitalize this building. We must first bring the building up to code and then we aim to transform it back into what it was originally intended to be used for. We've even decided to bring back it's old name; Myrtle Theatre. . . We are fully aware that this is an enormous project and at times it is overwhelming. I often wonder what we've gotten ourselves into. Bringing a building built over 100 years ago up to code presents some very unique and interesting challenges. But we are committed to doing everything in our power to accomplish our goals. We hope to bring an old building back to life and in doing so breathe some new life into an increasingly empty downtown. . . At this point in time we are working to secure as much financial assistance as possible, as this project is an extremely costly one. We have hired professional help in developing a business plan and applying for grants. We intend to apply for grants for as long as it takes in order to complete this project. We are taking a realistic approach and realize that this will likely be an extended project with many surprises and frustrations to come.. . We are thrilled with the amount of enthusiasm that various members of the community have expressed. Groups of all varieties have inquired one way or another as to what our plans are and have shown excitement at the prospect of restoring this old building. We will try to keep everyone as up to date as possible through this website, as well as post progress pictures.
