Here is a little family history (told as best I can remember) about my grandparents store ....anyone feel free to comment about memories or stories of the place as well..... History of Nath & Jane Ann Hiscock’s Shop. ____________________________. Nath came from a large fishing family , The Hiscock’s , . one of biggest fishing families in the community. Sadly , at a . very young age (early 20’s ) he was in an accident . on a fishing schooner off Baccalieu Island that . resulted in loosing his leg and having a prosthetic. His fishing days then over, he married Jane Ann (Pinhorn) when they were both in their early 30’s and opened their small family . store from front of their house in approx. 1946. . They operated there for many years until the . early 1970’s , when due to illness they closed their doors. . Growing up, there have always been many . fond stories shared, like the ones here. . Things are very different now but memories . of these times live through our family still.. These pictures posted on this page from time to time are from my family’s collection , mostly taken by Nath's brother Jake Hiscock and show how things were . The artifacts I have and will display in the store are things that were common in all the corner shops in a typical Newfoundland outport at that time. Some highlights of their store include owning the very first gas pump on the Trinity Bay . Shore, serving fresh fruits when available and . making ice cream sandwiches etc which are told . to have been a real treat at that time. They also . owned one of the very first color TV’s in . Winterton – Saturday nights were a night to have . lots of friends over to watch hockey or wrestling. and enjoy a drink and a ‘feed’. Nath & Jane Ann’s . was fondly known by everyone as a great place . to visit and enjoy and always a hub of activity!. (*Note - you may notice when you see stories that Nath's name is spelled with a " th " - his given name was Nathaniel and indeed Nath was the shortened version,. However , with our typical outport way of speaking , it came out as "Nat"....and when designing our signage it just didn't seem to look right as "Nath" knowing it would be pronounced that way!
