Detailed description is Grow, Educate, Reclaim! North Star Lodge No. 2 (Des Moines), Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Iowa. North Star Lodge was organized in Des Moines, IA on October 6th, 1870 as North Star No. 11 by Grand Master Alexander Clark of Missouri. The Charter Members were WM W. Carter; SW S. Carter; JW S. B. Smith; Treasurer A. Brown; and Secretary S.W. Birney.. . In 1880, conventions were held in Des Moines to discuss the formation of an Iowa Grand Lodge. In August 1881 the African Grand Lodge of Iowa was finally established. North Star No. 11 was then renumbered as North Star No. 2 as it was the 2nd oldest lodge in the convention. The 1st Officers for North Star No. 2 were WM G.H. Cleggett; SW Jos. Shepard; JW H. Mulligan; Treasurer James Todd; and Secretary G.S. Stewart.. . In the summer of 1887 the African Grand Lodge of Iowa and Hiram Grand Lodge of Iowa met in Des Moines in the Hall of North Star No. 2 where a resolution was made to unite both Grand Lodges of Iowa. The United Grand Lodge of Iowa was thus formed combining both Grand Lodges & G.H. Cleggett (who was the current Grand Master of African Grand Lodge) was elected as the 1st Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Iowa. He is historically considered to be 1 of 2 men responsible for the formation of the United Grand Lodge of Iowa.
