Detailed description is A perusal of our course offerings will show you that we take our mission very seriously. The Literacy Education Department has great breadth as we offer coursework pertaining to literacy, intercultural, and language education across the lifespan, including work in reading, the language arts, children's and young adolescent literature, bilingual education, English as a second language, social studies and science education, and multicultural education. Our depth is observed in that we offer service courses for initial teacher certification programs, the M.S.Ed. in Literacy Education with specializations in reading and also in ESL/bilingual education, the Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with specializations in literacy education, science, social studies, and environmental education, the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education, and the new Graduate Certificate in Children's and Young Adult Literature/Media. Students enrolled in the master's degree may earn the Illinois State Board of Education Reading Teacher Endorsement and the I.S.B.E. Reading Specialist Certification. The department also offers courses leading to the I.S.B.E. teaching approval for English as a second language and the I.S.B.E. teaching approval for bilingual education.
