An entirely vegan cart in the amazing dining district clustered around the intersection of SE Belmont and SE 34th Ave. There are so many great places to eat right here on these couple of blocks and it’s humbling to be in such company.. . We’re offering a menu of casual, warm, vegan street food that’s reasonably priced and easy to take with you. Plus, beer and wine (all vegan) to drink if you're hanging around the pod.. . About Ethics. We are apolitical at point of sale. Everyone is welcome regardless of their food orientation.. . Having said that, food justice and good stewardship of that which has been entrusted to us by the good lord or lady or hornéd-goat-faced-bull-calf-baby thing is of paramount importance.. . We strive to source our ingredients as ethically as possible while keeping prices reasonable. But it’s hard to know everything all the time. I regularly discover astounding new ways that we wreck the world for fun and profit and it’s surprising how the produce of these practices can find its way onto even a well-guarded plate.. . I count on my justice, nature, and animal loving friends to keep me accountable. If you see anything that I’m doing or serving that raises your socially conscious eyebrow, please let me know in the most constructive way possible and I will do my best to make it right.. . About The Menu. OK, it’s not wheat grass juice shots and kale smoothies. I love both of those things and I hope to offer more fresh produce-based dishes in the spring. I also want to add raw options and increase my gluten free offerings.. . For now, I’m keeping it simple. It’s all about warm winter food. I’m planning to bring some new soups online in the near future and hot nuts should be on the menu shortly.. . About The Proprietor. That’s me. My name is Peter and I’m a recovering programmer. (“Hi Peter!” they chorused.) I’ve spent the last 30 years working for other people. No complaints on that score, but I thought it was time I tried something new. So I jumped ship (or was pushed) and am combining my passion for all things vegan with my lifelong ambition to be a short order cook (no, really). The result is Open Source Café.. . I am also a single father of two awesome girls who are my absolute top priorities. Which brings me to…. . About Our Hours. As you may know or can easily imagine, single parenthood is incredibly time consuming. “We want to eat. We need clean clothes. We need rides to school.” Waa, waa, waa. They’re never satisfied.. . I also know how frustrating it is to walk into a cart pod and not be able to find anything to eat because everyone is closed at what seems like prime time.. . To avoid disappointment and keep my children from calling the Child Neglect Hotline, I have posted hours that I believe I can keep, but that still allow me to get all my dad stuff done (and I've taken away their phones). If I’m not there during my normal opening hours, you can rest happy in the knowledge that somebody is probably in the hospital.. . I will be opening for additional hours whenever I can.
