Detailed description is A small homestead with the intent of preserving rare yet valuable sustainable heritage breeds of livestock and heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables. We moved to Vermont in the summer of 2013, with the goal of becoming more self-sufficient. As a society, we have gotten so far away from our food! We raise chickens for eggs and meat, with a focus on heritage breeds that are in need of preservation. So many heritage breeds that went by the wayside in favor of commercial breeds are in need of conservation, lest they become extinct. Heritage breeds must be APA (American Poultry Association) standard breeds, must be naturally mating, have a long, productive outdoor lifespan, and a slow growth rate. These traits are the opposite of commercially raised meat these days. Heritage breeds have a more complex flavor and are often more nutrtious than commercially-raised meat. They take longer to mature, but good things come to those who wait!. . Our birds have the opportunity to free range so they can feast on bugs and plants of the forest and fields, and hopefully not eat my garden in the summer! They also are supplemented with local grain feed as well as fermented feed. Fermented feed provides more nutritional benefit than regular grain, increasing egg size and nutritional content of eggs as well as meat.. .
