Detailed description is Paul's Place began in the fall of 2000 as a response to mainly Haitian-American children living in the neighborhood surrounding the church who were in need Paul’s Place After School Program began in the fall of 2000 as a response to the need of at-risk children and their families living in the neighborhoods surrounding the church. These children were in need of a safe haven, nutrition and homework help. . . Since then, the school has served more than 100 elementary, middle and high school age children, providing an environment filled with caring mentors who tutor the students and assist with homework to improve academic performance and self confidence. The goal is give the students the tools and support they need to stay in school, graduate and go on to college or viable jobs. To date, over 90% percent of the students have stayed in school. Of those who have been in the program long enough, 95% have graduated from high school and have either gone on to college or are employed, a reality that would have otherwise been but a dream.. . Students are fed a snack and well balanced, family-style meal. Music lessons and singing in the choir, art and gardening, supervised recreation and an “earned” Friday field trip are a few of the many opportunities provided. . . Paul’s Place has moved beyond just aiding the children and keeping them safe. Since 2005, Paul’s Place has had a part time Haitian-American social worker on staff. She provides a vital link between the after school, the children, their schools and their families. We conduct regular home visits to discuss school-related issues, health matters, insurance, housing and employment. All of this is provided at no cost to the participants.. .
