The "Heavenly" Zeta Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated was founded in 1974 at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus. We were the first historically Black Greek-Lettered organization on the campus and currently encompasses undergraduate membership for the University of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State, University of Hartford, and Trinity College. Zeta Lambda chapter was founded by these distinguished brothers:. . - Ronald Harrison. - Gerald Simmons. - Fred Simmons. - Winfield Coachman. . The development of the chapter began when Black and Hispanic students realized that their needs were not being met in the University's community. After recognizing the need for change, six of the predominantly Black Greek-lettered organizations held a joint informational to meet with interested students. Following this event, perspective brothers interested in Phi Beta Sigma contacted Brothers Ronald Harrison and Gerald Simmons about the possibility of establishing a chapter at UCONN. Impressed by the interest, these two young men sent a letter to the National Secretary, Brother William Doar.. . On Sunday, January 30, 1974 twelve men were initiated into the Crescent Club. Following a rigorous semester, June 25th 1974 marked the birth of the Zeta Lambda chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. at the University of Connecticut. Now 40 years later, the chapter still stands as a pillar of community service and academic excellence.
